Shailesh Ramamurthy Flute Recital- October 19, 2014

Yesterday we featured a flute recital by Vid. Shailesh Ramamurthy accompanied by Vid. Anand Vishwanathan on the violin, and Chi. Akshay Anand on the mridangam. The concert was held in the beautiful residence of Sri Arunachala, next to Olde Bangalore. Thanks to Meenakshi and Arun for their hospitality!
We had a wonderful audience of great rasikas who travelled a big distance in rainy weather to listen to a vidwan who very rarely gives public performances.
Shailesh gave us all the experience of pure flute music dipped in classicism and melody and totally shorn of speed gimmicks. He took us on a journey through profound ragas like Shahana and Todi. He gave us a colourful Mohana Kalyani. He essayed the difficult Sri Vishvanatham in Chaturdasha-ragamalika of Muthuswami Dikshitar. He played a lilting Sarasa Sama Dana and a moving Enna Thavam Shaidanai Yashoda. He played Durga on the long flute and gave us the GNB-popularised Dharma Shravana.
Anand on the violin provided solid accompaniment and came into his own in Mohana Kalyani and Todi.
Akshay played a brilliant tani in Mishra Jhampa Tala after Dachukovalena, and gave impeccable sonorous mridangam accompaniment throughout. The natural acoustics of a mikeless(almost) concert were very enjoyable!
The song list will be appended separately.
Shailesh Ramamurthy is an MTech from IIT Kharagpur, winning the prestigious Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma gold medal. He is an acknowledged expert in signal processing.

Dr Vedavalli and disciples presented an IMPECCABLE program. The vidushi made highly appropriate, succinct introductions to each of the Utsava sampradaya krithis selected. The visuals of Rama pattabhisheka icons on the stage and the temple abhisheka images were extremely beautiful. The singers were seated In a beautiful arc on the left and they all sang with a very high level of musical sensitivity and devotion. Even the voices selected for individual lines were very well done. Each singer modulated her voice the right way. The right side arc had Sri RK Shriram Kumar on the violin, Sri Ashwin Anand on the Veena, Sri Arun Prakash on the mridangam and Sri Guruprasad on ghatam. The percussion support was subdued as befit the occasion. The violin and particularly Veena musical introductions to each song were melodious.

The sound settings for all the vocals and instruments were done beautifully. The camera work was exquisite.

I can say this is perhaps the FINEST television program I have seen on DD. Full marks to Podhigai.

I had an unforgettable Ramanavami thanks to the Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr R Vedavalli.

Brilliant Start to Rasaanveshanam - Concert at Home

Abhishek Raghuram - Vocal
HM Smitha              - Violin
Anantha R. Krishnan - Mridangam

Abhishek delivered an unforgettable concert at Arunachala today. We had over 60 people including guests from Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bhagavatars of OS Sunder group who had done Bhajans for Aruns family this morning. Arun and Meenakshi had made excellent arrangements.

Abhishek was accompanied by an able and melodious HN Smitha and a SIMPLY SPECTACULAR ANANTHA R Krishnan.

The song list was:
1. Viriboni Bhairavi
2. vatapi Hamsadhwani
3. Vinata Suta Jayantasena T
4. Ada Modi Charukeshi
5. Meenakshi Memudam Purvi Kalyani
6. tani
7. Mayamma Ahiri
8. A song in Surutti Telugu which went like Rama Namam...
9. Mangalam

Purvi Kalyani scaled unprecedented melodic depths of the raga and some unique simply unique phrases that brought out hidden gems in this raga. He did much work in the lower half of the scale, upper half of the scale, top scale and lots of jump phrases. His swaras were electric in parts.

The song was rendered magnificently. I think nothing was left untouched or unadorned. It was his total worship of the idol of Meenakshi in Madurai, with all flowers, sandal paste, incense and offerings. In the words of Venky, your chartered accountant, it was Paisa Vasool.

The Jayantasena was handled very well too.
Ahiri was like litchi with ice cream - a surprise dish.

Anand delivered exquisite touches and punches every minute of the concert. The mike arrangements were excellent, we got the full tonality of the left and right wonderfully. He delighted us all with a great tani after a superb Meenakshi.

Abhishek had met with a big accident ten days ago on his way to a concert in Hole Narasipura. The car turned turtle. His ribs are badly bruised and hurt inside. He had great pain while sitting down or standing up. He said his concert today had been possible because of great love and care of family, friends and well wishers.

He initially said he would sing for less than a couple of hours, I think he did finally 3 hours.

Jayanthi and Kumaresh brought him and his wife in their car, they stayed throughout and enjoyed the concert.

The full house had nothing but happy memories after the concert. Even the prasadam Sundal and Kesari was good.

On to the next concert!!!!!
